The Friday History Lesson

The Desert of Arizona
Clear 84 Degrees

Today we get a history lesson! A trip down memory lane really. Let’s turn back the clock say – four years – then bring ourselves back up to the present.

Circa 2011…

The free daily Client Letter (the letter you’re reading right now) launches… a year or so passes.
(Subscribers say: “This stuff is good! I can’t believe you’re giving it away free!”)

Marketing wizard Jason starts charging for Client Letter $9.00/mo.
(Jason succeeds in building an enormous wall in between him and his future customers, clients and subscribers. He builds this wall right at the entrance to his universe. Dumb.)

Marketing wizard Jason stops charging for Client Letter
(Smarter…)

Jason launches the monthly Rainmaker Letter as a print only newsletter for $39/mo. (It was working so well, he decides to change it and make it a digital only newsletter for $99 per year. He’ll help EVERYONE, he thought. The PDF newsletter manages to get lost on everyone’s hard drive. Many paid subscribers do not read it.)

Jason once again makes the Rainmaker Letter a print newsletter. (Subscribers actually read it. Smarter…)

Are you beginning to see a pattern here? I’ll tell you what it is, just in case you’re not paying attention:

Jason hits wall, bumps head, turns around, goes another way.

Now you might think the lesson is that persistence pays off… that you have to make a billion mistakes in order to get something right. That’s way too simplistic. And just taking that lesson and putting it into your head might lead you far astray from where you should be.

The lesson here is that this process is how I make progress. It’s something I discovered over the years. This bumping around is EXACTLY how I’m wired to proceed. These aren’t mistakes, these are my process.

You may or may not be wired this way. Your work is to figure out how you are wired. Once you discover how your compass works, you can step forward with a whole lot more confidence.
