The Desert of Arizona

I’ve “wasted” a lot of time over the years working with clients and entertaining opportunities I had no business being involved with.
It’s nice to be “wanted,” but after a while you realize that if you care more about THAT you’ll do it at the expense of your well-being.
What happens when you fill your calendar with clients who don’t really deserve to be working with you?
What happens is that you pay an enormous opportunity cost for being “busy” while all of the great clients go right on by.
I’m not talking about anyone’s value as a person here when I say a client doesn’t “deserve” you. I’m talking about you practicing a certain level of discernment about who you allow into your business.
It’s nice to transform yourself into a “client magnet,” but never forget that magnets don’t just attract! They also equally repel. It just depends on the object you’re talking about.
Sometimes, the quickest way to attract the folks you actually want is to actively repel everyone else.
Have you thought about your ways of repelling what’s not right for you? Or do you just let it all in and work like a crazy person to keep going?
Do you know who you and your work are NOT RIGHT for? Does the rest of the world know that?
Standing for something in the marketplace comes at a price. When you stand for X, it’s hard to also stand for Y, and Z.
Don’t get bogged down with people and clients that don’t belong in your life. You have the choice about who those people are.
You don’t have to be a jerk about it, just stop investing energy and attention in the wrong people.
