I often talk about how the life of an Incomparable Expert is a whole lot like a train running on a track. You can catch up on this concept here.
But what happens if the “train” (you) WANTS a specific passenger to get on and they don’t? What if they even tell you they ARE going to get on your train, but then they still don’t?
How is a poor little train supposed to deal with rejection like that?
The short answer is that the train never feels rejected. Because the perspective the train has doesn’t allow for rejection. No one is granted that power over the train. Because no one is in control of the train except for the train. The train passes by. Passengers get on, some hop off. The train keeps moving. The end.
The goal isn’t to get passengers (no one likes a needy train), the goal is to run the route.
You build your client attraction systems, you watch them run. You study what does and does not happen. You make adjustments.
If you’re left feeling “rejected,” or with that urge to “follow-up,” that’s a great clue. It’s a clue that you have some track left to build for your train. Otherwise, you get emotionally attached to each potential passenger and it can drive you nuts.
Instead, finish your track. Finish the process by which prospective clients have a chance to hop on your train. When is the opportunity for them to get on? When does that opportunity go away? When does it return?
Build the process, complete the track. Then, forget about it and enjoy the ride.
