“Really? That’s way more than we normally pay for that…”
Write this on your bathroom mirror and look at it every morning:
It’s not about the work. It’s about what it costs to have YOU do it. That’s the only rationale for your fees that you need.
If your prospects are coming to you and bulking when you quote $XX for a certain activity… and if you accept their premise that this is an issue: you lose.
If a prospect comes to you and asks how much it’s going to be for X, then has an issue when you quote that fee, there are a few things wrong:
First, they view you as a vendor, pure and simple. This wouldn’t happen otherwise. This also won’t change without time. Game over.
Second, they are more interested in getting the work done than in the specific person who is doing it.
This is not what you want. And because of that, I would call these prospects unqualified for you.
When that happens, I just let ’em go. I don’t chase, I don’t close, I don’t negotiate.
It’s not because I’m so awesome, it’s because I’ve learned that if I pursue that type of a client, I get busy with those types of projects. I don’t want the business, because it’s the wrong type of business for me.
It doesn’t move me forward, it actually moves me backwards.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of work like that out there.
But success to me isn’t about being busy, it’s about riding a steadily climbing roller coaster. Fees go up per unit of work or time. That’s the ride I want to be on because that means my effectiveness (at being valuable to the world) is increasing.
This climbing roller coaster is what happens when you have a Platform that works. The longer your Platform has been running, the more demand for you increases.
God isn’t making any more of YOU, so with increased demand per the same limited supply, things get better for you!
