For some reason, anytime someone says, “To be honest…” or “Trust me…” those statements always jump out at me.
Kind of reminds me of a dumb mistake I’ve made countless times when my wife gets upset. The dumb mistake happens when I show up and tell her to just relax. Ouch!
A picture I saw on Facebook® the other day summarizes it well, “Telling an angry woman to calm down works about as well as baptizing a cat.”
There are just some things intelligent people shouldn’t say.
There are also some things intelligent service providers shouldn’t say.
“Trust me” is just one of those things.
You can’t tell people to trust you. It makes them wonder why they shouldn’t trust you. You have to earn the privilege of having them trust you.
You can’t talk about how “honest” you are without triggering everyone’s B.S. meter.
During the first session of the Platform Lab yesterday, I explained that having a Platform allows you to communicate things WITHOUT having to say them.
With a Platform, you don’t have to talk about how trustworthy you are. You don’t even need your clients to do it for you. All you do is show it and the message gets through.
