The Fish Is Always the Last To Know

I worked with a business consultant once who was fond of saying something like, “The fish is always the last one to discover water…”

In other words, the fish has a major blindspot around water. It can’t see it because that’s all it knows.

Often times, you are the very last person to know just how much value you bring to the world. It seems like this is a widespread universal joke.

Instead, we all go running around looking for someone else to show us this.

Like many things in my life, I stumbled on a solution to this one.

Much like the daily email habit “cured” my lack of discipline by threatening me with public ridicule should I not deliver, it ALSO helped me to “discover water.”

The fact is, you can’t add value to too many lives for too long before the reflection of that impact shows up right in front of your eyes. That’s what a media platform does. It adds value to someone’s life.

One moment you can’t see water, the next moment, you can.

And once you FEEL that… once you internalize that feeling of being truly valuable, that’s something you can call up on demand… just like a memory.

You call it up when you’re negotiating, when you’re speaking with prospects, even when you’re writing.

The platform model of client attraction allows you to develop the ability to give to yourself, slowly over time, what so many of us spend our entire LIVES trying to get from others.

In that situation, everyone wins.
