I think there are two flavors of business owner:

  • Business owners who are looking out only for themselves.
  • Business owners who understand that the best way to get what they want is to look out for others first.

Now we all have to eat. So at some level, we’re all in EVERYTHING for ourselves. But the real test is how other people feel.

Do they feel like you’re in it for YOU… or THEM?

When you meet a stranger on the street and you ask them to buy something right away (because YOU are trying to immediately recoup your costs incurred for walking down the street to find that stranger,) how does that affect the way that person thinks about you?

Oh, you wouldn’t do that? That would be kind of weird to do to a complete stranger on the street, right?

Well, that’s what happens all the time online without people even thinking twice.

“New to my world? You clicked? Why not BUY something while you’re here. And then, after you buy the first thing, I’m going to ask you to buy something else! Not because I think you need it, but because I know I can sell it. Yeah for me!”

It’s funny when you say it out loud.

But this is how a lot of “business” is done on the interwebz. And it’s an enormous opportunity for you on the path of the Incomparable Expert. Because it makes it easy for any smart individual to rise WAY above that level of operation.

But this journey is not without its obstacles.

As Client Letter, Charles J, wrote in response to yesterday’s issue:

“Online marketing is lost in the wilderness of lies and deceit merged with analytics.”

Whether or not this is true of you isn’t the point. The point is that everyone “out there” thinks this. Sadly, they have been trained that most of what they are told is not true. And therefore, we have quite a hurdle to overcome in the trust department.

Because the path that has been worn before us puts us in a difficult position. Instead of being given the benefit of the doubt online, we’re presumed guilty until proven otherwise.

What do you do about that?

Well, the first step is to not try to PROVE anything. We’re not overcoming objections here. We’re not covertly persuading with the order forms hiding behind our back. We’re not throwing around NLP magic because we learned it was a cool way to get what we want.

We are communicating through our behavior, over time.

We are SHOWING we operate on a completely different level than slime.

This is one of the functions of the media platform.

Almost five years ago I started writing this Client Letter.

Why have I kept going when I’ve never really kept ANYTHING going?

Well, you already know I’m not the most disciplined person in the world. So we can’t chalk it up to willpower.

We CAN say that I enjoy writing. This is what I do. So that’s part of it.

We CAN say that I enjoy waking up to people telling me I’ve helped them transform their lives.

We CAN say that I enjoy helping clients build client attraction systems that position them as an Incomparable Expert.

And we CAN say that, no matter what’s going on in my personal world, I receive an enormous amount of clarity of purpose and satisfaction from waking up and doing my best to help other people.

This is what you get from a media platform that works.

You get all these things… you get to do something you enjoy, you get to help other people, and we haven’t even gotten to the material rewards, which come as well.

All of this from a decision to do something most others won’t. Dare I say it’s treating others as you’d like to be treated?

Or in other words:

It’s a simple decision to be valuable FIRST.
