Putting Fear on a Diet

There’s a funny thing about fear. The more you feed it, the bigger it gets.

It’s like that lazy relative everyone has somewhere in the family tree. The one that’s been “looking” for a job for the past 15 years. The one that just sits around on the couch watching reruns of The Price is Right and eating Pringles.

I wish fear was that harmless. It’s not.

Just like that relative, if you feed your fear, it will grow.

How do you feed fear? What does it eat? It feeds on energy. Your energy. By focusing on it with an energy of resistance, it grows in power. By focusing on it and “wishing” it wasn’t there, you are helping it to stick around.

That actually makes it worse. It’s like taking a hurricane out over the ocean. It picks up steam out there.

Awareness is energy. Your attention is energy.

I know I live in Sedona AZ, home of crazy people and new age fluff, but this is science. Geeks have proven it.

So when you resist the fear, you actually ADD to it.

Instead, just feel it. It’s an odd thing to recommend if it’s the first time you’ve heard it. But it works.

Just sit there in the fear and let yourself “simmer” in it for a while. If you’ve never tried this, you’re probably in for quite an uncomfortable situation at first.

But soon, if you sit with it long enough, something’s going to shift. And all of a sudden, that fear is going to dissolve just a bit. Maybe hardly at all at first.

But develop that habit and you’ll get really good at staying in your power even when you’re scared.

As you might imagine, this ability can have huge benefits in the client business.

Just think back to the last time you did something stupid with a prospect or client simply because you were scared.

I’ve been working with fear for a very long time. The other week, I sat down and mapped out a way to stop it from controlling your life. It was a little “out there” compared to other stuff I’ve created. Some people were offended. But I’m not here for those folks, so it’s no problem.

As you can tell by the feedback at the bottom of that page, it was a powerful event.
