Investor and contrarian Doug Casey often talks about how he sees the world of the future full of what he calls “phyles.”
In his own words, a phyle is a…
“group of people that’s self-defined by whatever values they share. A phyle is not limited by race or language or geography – or, most importantly, by borders on maps or other such fictions – although it could be, if its members chose to be so limited. The word phyle was coined by science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his masterwork, The Diamond Age. It comes from the Greek, φυλή which means “tribe” or “clan.”But it would be at least as apt if they were called philes, stemming from the Greek word philia, which means “love”– the same root in the word “philosophy”. The basic idea is that man is a social animal, and we tend to prefer to run with others who are like us – or who love what we love. Birds of a feather flock together, in either case.”
I see this happening all over the place. Effortless communication makes it possible.
People are organizing themselves based on who they are, not where they are.
You can do this in the client business too…
Instead of becoming who you need to be to be liked, hired, respected, you can simply BE WHO YOU ARE and attract others from every corner of the globe who resonate with that.
Instead of going under the metaphorical knife and using plastic surgery to become attractive, you simply shine some light on yourself and let the right people come forward.
I tried the “plastic surgery” route early on in my client life. I thought I had to add a little bit of tuck here, take away a little sag there.
I was looking for who I should be. Who could I be like so people are attracted to what I have? Very, very tiring.
The only way to fly, in my opinion, is as yourself.
It’s about setting up the LIGHTING correctly, not changing you.
By that I mean, you have to find the overlap between a natural part of YOU and the people you want to attract.
That’s why understanding yourself is important.
You build on yourself. You don’t try to become someone else.
This is not about being a chameleon. Those days are over. People want to eat REAL “FOOD” because they’ve been starved for too long with FAKE “FOOD.”
If you’re clueless about where to start, try Sally Hogshead’s Fascination Advantage Test. Mine was spot on when I did it.
It didn’t tell me how to be me. Instead, it served like someone holding up a mirror in front of my life so I could get a quick glimpse at the reflection. By seeing that, I learned something that I can use.
