So much of what we’ve been taught to do in business is about trying to be a “somebody.”
We write books, we get ourselves interviewed, we create programs and courses. We think that if we could just be a somebody, people would notice us and come for what we have.
What if you allow other folks to run after becoming a somebody? Somebody’s have an agenda, they have plans, they know where they want to go and they work to manipulate reality to get there.
The problem is when they make it! Because now they’re a somebody. And now the work transitions from becoming a somebody to remaining a somebody. Everyday is full of fear of loss! Congrats!
Now you’ve got something to lose. It’s not a real something but it sure feels real! If it leaves, so too will the money and the attention and the respect that came with it…or that you thought came with it, right?
And this is the prison of the somebody. The being who was free but couldn’t see it now built more walls to feel safe.
There is freedom in being a nobody. Just do the work, make the stuff, serve the people, but save your energy for that.
- There is stillness in being a nobody.
- There is power in being a nobody.
- There is expansion in being a nobody.
- There is no story in being a nobody.
But what about all of your grand plans to be a somebody? What should you do with those?
What if you drop them? They’re pretty heavy to carry around. And frankly, they are limited at best.
Being a nobody involves a complete shifting of the poles of your life. Instead of going out to “get” life, you stand up and allow life to pass through you.
People will feel this shift. They will feel you have nothing to defend. In business, it’s probably the most attractive force there is!
But it’s just the power of being a nobody. It’s a power accessible to everyone, right now.
