We humans seem to be very good at making our own set of blinders that keep us locked into a certain view of reality.
I certainly was an expert at doing this!
For example, in college, it never occurred to me (honestly, not even ONCE) to question the premise that maybe getting a job was a nutso move.
Who wants a job? Who wants to be told what to do and when and for how long? People complain about their jobs. People complain about their bosses. People complain about how they have to put their lives on hold because of work.
For yours truly, not even all of these clues were enough to break through the programming. The focus remained: how will I get a job?
What do I have to do to show up and get “picked” by a group of people so they can tell me what to do? 🙂
But not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur right? Not everyone is prepared to make their own way, right?
Ha… yet another set of blinders I got to live within for too many years.
This particular set of blinders crafts a perception of an entrepreneur as a confident risk taker willing to “burn the bridges” and pursue success at all costs…EVEN if it means working 25 hours a day and “grinding and hustling” your way over hot coals for years on end.
That perception of entrepreneur makes fun of the “lazy” people who just aren’t willing to pay their dues to succeed.
When you realize this is all B.S., it’s an amazingly freeing feeling!
But it’s darn hard to see beyond these self-imposed blinders.
Now it might seem that I have a genetic defect that makes me allergic to anything status quo, (OK, you might be correct) but this “defect” does have some value.
When you practice viewing things from the opposite side, or from an extremely unpopular or even unknown perspective, you get to see things that are otherwise not obvious.
For example, if you go out and look about how to grow your business, you’ll have access to a steady stream of people instructing you on the strategies and skills required to basically coerce people into buying things you have.
When I had my blinders on, I thought doing that made you successful.
Now that these blinders are off, I realize that’s got to be the dumbest, most short-sighted long term business strategy there is!
It’s all a matter of perspective.
What I know is that doing the work required to take off the blinders is worth it.
Which ones are you going to start with?
