I was on the phone today for a coaching call with a client who was talking about how the feeling of “boredom” he gets, from time to time, causes him to dream about “blowing things up” in his business and starting something new.
This is a feeling I know.
In fact, in all the years I spent chasing success, not once did I EVER really prepare myself for what it would feel like to take that first step AFTER actually getting there.
I had a goal. I imagined being at the goal. But that’s where the movie ended, really. It ended with the achievement. I never gave any energy to getting clear about what would happen after that point.
So one day, I realized I had achieved this “success” I had dreamed about for so long.
And you know what it felt like?
It felt like the air went out of the balloon! I realized, I was still myself!
So that makes a guy wonder.
Was I really interested in success all those years? Or was I simply hooked into a program that required a “chase” to flood my system with a substance that made me feel alive?
Is that really living?
Why wouldn’t achieving what you want to achieve give you lasting fulfillment?
So here’s an even bigger question to ask yourself:
Who would you be without the chase for success?
There are three ways to deal with this question:
- Work on getting your answer before you need it.
- Work on getting your answer when you need it.
- Just keep working and chasing so you never have to come face to face with yourself.
From my experience, success and freedom are actually quite uncomfortable. We haven’t really practiced dealing with that.
If you can hold that space once you find either of those two things, you will lift yourself to a new level of being.
If you haven’t developed enough to hold the energy that is created with success or freedom, you will search for comfort. And that often leads to starting the “chase” all over again.
