Some crazy things can happen when you work with human beings. That’s just the reality of working with clients.
But what really makes it interesting is when you allow your mind to get involved telling you stories about what may or may not be happening with any one client.
Ever had a client project end so abruptly it made you wonder if you did something wrong?
I have. And if you let your mind run wild, you can really dream up a long list of all the things your client MIGHT be thinking about you.
But this is the client world, where things are rarely what they seem. So it can get even crazier than that.
It can, and it does! So you might wonder what’s going on when that very client comes BACK to ask about working together again. What?
Maybe they didn’t hate you… maybe they weren’t mad… maybe nothing actually happened…!
The moral of the story is this:
If you allow yourself to make up stories about what you think the reality might be with any one client, you’ll just go nuts. Don’t worry, it’ll happen slowly, over time, until one day you wake up and see a crazy person looking back at you in the mirror.
It’s a smart idea to stop telling yourself stories about anything. In fact, you might even consider forgetting everything that’s happened in the past and just treat each moment with a client like it’s brand new.
I think it’s best to develop a very short term memory.
In any one moment, just ask yourself, “Given where I’m at and where I’m trying to go, what’s the best decision for me to make NOW?” Give it a shot and see how it works for you.
