This month, in conjunction with the Lead Lab, I’m knee deep in thinking about and helping people with lead generation.
To be blunt, this is no easy task. That’s the reason so FEW businesses have the lead flow they want.
Step 1 is hard work. Step 2 is hard work. And then you move on to Step 3 which is… (wait for it) more hard work!
But it’s what separates the pros from the amateurs. And so the select few do the work and reap the rewards.
Business, according to me, is a problem solving pursuit.
It’s not about making money (that is a byproduct), it’s not about living life on your own terms (that’s also a byproduct), it’s not even about “building a business” (another byproduct!).
It’s about solving real problems for real people.
And the fact is, many struggle because they spend an enormous amount of time on the WRONG things.
We do that because that’s how we were trained.
Here’s the training I received:
Training to develop skills for following instructions and being accepted by “superiors” = 16 years
Training to solve real problems for real people WITHOUT direction from the outside = 0 years
This second type of training is worth working at. And as you can see, my history shows a serious deficiency in this area.
Here’s my program for fixing this:
First, you must learn to identify the problems you want to solve accurately.
Then you must learn to see the problems from the perspective of your prospect.
Next, you must create an effective (superior even) solution to that problem.
And finally, you must communicate this to the people you can help.
I realized when I started investing the same amount of effort in this problem-solving direction as I did over the years in the “becoming a sheep” direction, I might actually make some real progress.
