You, “The Doctor?”
Friends Don’t Let Friends Work With Bad Clients

The other day, I walked into our local veterinarian’s office to get my dogs rabies shots. There were two people in the room–the technician and the doctor.
The situation reminded me of the two frames of mind we have to choose from as independent professionals.
The first frame of mind is that of the doer of the thing we do. If you’re a graphic designer, then you design.
The other frame of mind is that of a professional advisor, who happens to have the skill of graphic design in his belt of tools.
Most graphic designers field questions like, “How much would it be to design a brochure?”
Fewer field questions like, “We’re trying to make this new product launch a huge success, how would you recommend we do that from a design point of view?”
In scenario 1, the designer is told what to do. In scenario 2, the designer is consulted about what to do.
Scenario 1 shows the designer as a technician.
Scenario 2 shows him as “the doctor.”
You want to be the doctor.
Being the doctor will have a positive effect on your income.
Being the technician will tend to have a negative effect.
It’s easy to forget about being the doctor and fall into being the technician. If you don’t have a way to remind yourself about this on a consistent basis, get one. It’s one of your biggest business assets.
Cementing this frame of mind in your psyche is a huge priority. It will make all the difference in the world.
Be the doctor, start today.
See you next time,
