Working With Elephants

One of the quickest things to get sloppy with in the client business is the quality of the individual that you allow through your front door.

Maybe cash flow is tight. Maybe you want more business than you have. Maybe you’re impatient. Maybe you’re just lonely! All of these things can lead you to allow unqualified folks into your universe. Or they can cause you to set your sights on a completely unwanted group of folks to begin with.

This is not smart.

It’s not smart because you actually end up working with these people. They take time just like any client takes time. But there’s time well invested and there’s time not so well invested.

Working with sub-optimal clients is a choice you pay for over and over.

It’s a little bit like making it your goal to help elephants fly. Maybe you’re going to have a success story or two over your lifetime, but I imagine most of the rest of your experience will be nothing but struggle.

It’s not because you aren’t good at what you do. It’s not because you have chosen the wrong business. It’s simply because elephants aren’t made to fly.

That’s the power of choosing the right clients.

In my experience, client selection is 80% of the game. You choose clients right, everything works better. You are happier, they are happier, you make more money, more easily. Everything flows more smoothly.

Take a look at your client selection criteria and process. If you want to move up a level, that’s the place to begin.

Better inputs give you better outputs.
