Slavery was abolished countrywide in the U.S. in 1865, but a different kind of slavery still exists for those of us who work with clients.

The good news is that this type of slavery is one of our own making.

The bad news is also that this type of slavery is one of our own making.

We hold the keys to freedom, but we built the walls of our prison.

So what’s going on when it feels like a client “owns” you?

What’s going on when you feel compelled to pick-up the phone at 6:30 PM when your client calls?

What’s going on when you keep your family waiting because your client was 30 minutes late to the meeting?

What’s going on in all of these situations is that you’ve handed your power over to another human being.

When you get frustrated because it feels like they “own” you, that’s you resenting your decision to give your power away.

When you feel like your client “owns” you, it’s because you’ve GIVEN them that authority.

You can take it back at any time… if you have the guts.

I didn’t used to have that guts.

Instead, I’d get led around like I was a lemming.

Sometimes I still do. But far less often these days than before.

There is NO ONE with authority over you other than you.

It doesn’t matter how much they are paying you. That fact never changes… unless you allow it to change.

Are you going to believe in your greatness? Or are you going to try to please someone enough so that they point out how great you are?

If you’re waiting on them to tell you how great you are, you’ve given away your most precious gift to someone who has no business having it.

If you’ve done it, take it back. Be a de-gifter.

No one owns you.

See you next time,
