Why I Became a Farmer

Talk to anyone that knows me and they’ll tell you, I’m about the farthest you can get from being a “green thumb” in the garden and still be alive.

For some reason, the plant kingdom and I seem to be allergic to each other. (I’m working on it.)

And yet, over the years, you could say I’ve become a full fledged farmer (without the overalls) in all of my ventures.

I farm for clients and customers. I grow them. Slowly.

It’s not like we’re mining for gold in this business.

We don’t have the luxury of hunting for stuff that’s stuck in the ground.

Our “treasure” has legs and is free to get up and run when it senses it is being pursued.

And boy can it run!

In fact, like I mention often, if you pursue the treasure (directly) it will flee. Same with money in my experience.

So you have to build your own magnet and start becoming the center of SOMEONE’s universe.

I think the most effective way to do that is to build a platform. Think newsletter, blog, videos, something.

Some sort of channel through which you become useful to others.

The Rainmaker Letter issue coming out at the end of this week will have an article about how to do that.

THIS is the work that so few are willing to do. THIS is the work that requires a commitment of time and effort to build. But THIS is the work that will build attraction over time.

The thing is, if you’re not doing this, you can bet that someone else in your space is.

And TIME matters in this game. So every day you’re not building, you are falling behind someone who is.

It’s that simple.

I know of no better or faster way to attract clients than slowly.

It makes all the difference.
