The Desert of Arizona
Partly Cloudy 63 Degrees
Many of you will probably remember the recurring “Three of These Kids” skit from Sesame Street.
If you don’t know it, take a look.
The object was to pick out the kid that was different.
The answer is immediately obvious to even a very young child. We are trained to spot differentiation.
See how easy it is to spot the football player in the video? Imagine if it was that obvious to spot YOU in your business? It’s a pretty powerful business lesson from Sesame Street.
If everyone in your area of the market is playing “baseball,” how do you show up playing “football?” If you’re playing a different game, not only do you stick out, but you can make up your own rules!
Don’t want to work, then invoice, then wait for payment? Then stop doing that. Get paid first. Do your own thing.
Don’t want to have your proposal lumped in with 40 other ones so the lowest price can be chosen? Then don’t do proposals. Do your own thing.
Don’t want to take incoming phone calls that aren’t scheduled and fill your day with constant interruption? Then don’t. Have office hours or phone call-in times, or schedule everything. Do your own thing.
Don’t want to work by the hour anymore? Want to break the walls of the more work equals more money prison? Then do it. Stop charging for time, start charging for value. Do your own thing.
The point of your business is to solve the problems of your clients. How you solve those problems is up to you, not them or anyone else. The point of your business is NOT to fall in line and follow some arbitrary set of “best practices” just because every other sheep is doing that.
The world doesn’t need any more sheep, the barn is already full.
P.S. Tomorrow, the next platform lab gets started. Today’s your last chance to get onboard. ALSO, tomorrow afternoon is the next Hotseat Session. These are complimentary and you’ll learn something even if you don’t get chosen for a live hotseat. Register here. Everyone who registers gets a recording. If you don’t register, no recording for you 🙂
