It’s hard not to want to help people.
It’s hard not to want to make them understand that you want to help them.
But if you’re truly interested in helping people, then you can’t go through your business life as the “Eager Beaver.”
Eager beavers repel people.
Eager beavers talk too much.
Eager beavers make decisions too quickly.
Eager beavers are way too ready to “get to work.”
Eager beavers are too helpful.
In fact, eager beavers can freak out prospects because… well, they’re just too darn eager!
If you get nothing else from today’s issue, get this: Don’t be the eager beaver.
The closer you come to acting like an Eager Beaver in your business, the harder it will be to attract clients.
It’s complicated. But let me break it down for you.
Despite anyone’s best intentions, eagerness, is an expression of want. Even if that want is your true desire to be helpful, it’s still want. It’s still need.
The most eager of beavers actually have to help. They’re compelled to help. And despite their apparent altruism, it can often be offensive.
No one is attracted by the WANT or lack of another. Write that one down somewhere. It seems to be a universal law, for humans and animals.
You know what happens in a pack of dogs when the leader expresses lack? The pack goes after the leader. They take the leader DOWN. It’s that much of an issue.
Think of the Godfather movie for a second.
The way the Godfather carried himself through the world is about as far as you can get from the world of the Eager Beaver. Excuse the murder, extortion and blackmailing for a moment, por favor… I’m trying to make an example. 🙂
Despite the dark side of the guy, he was immediately attractive to people. In fact, people FLOCKED to him.
Why?
Because he didn’t need anything. He didn’t want anything. In fact, most of what he did was to grant “favors” for others. At least at first.
Now I have to admit, this is a rather dark example, but it’s clear. So that’s why I’m highlighting it.
If you truly want to help someone, then learn the dynamics of how humans work. This is just one of them.
The more you WANT to help, the less likely it is that anyone will ask for your help.
To get to the heart of the WANT that most service providers are broadcasting out into the world, take a listen to this.
Never forget: eager beavers repel.
