You can tell when you encounter people in the business world who have little to no real experience.
They hold dear what I call “The Myth of the One Thing.”
That’s the belief where if you just get this one thing to happen, this one big break, this one successful ad campaign, this one guest post, this one networking connection, this one joint-venture, this one nod from a famous celebrity, this one deep-pocketed investor, then everything is going to blow up into a huge success.
As best as I can tell so far, this is a complete load of B.S.
Not only is it most always NOT true, directing energy (in the form of hope) towards this mysterious ONE THING is an enormous waste of life force.
But it gets worse…
When you spend your days “hoping” for this one big thing to happen and doing everything in your power to steer the universe in the direction of making that happen, you set yourself up for an even bigger calamity when things don’t work out.
When things don’t go according to your story about how they’re supposed to go (which in my experience, is almost all the time!), then you throw in additional emotional turmoil for that.
You end up miserable and with no progress. Good job! You did it all to yourself.
If you’re trying to sprint towards the one big thing so that success can carry you forward, stop, take a breath and sit on your hands for a second before you make it worse.
This is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Or really, 4 marathons.
If you don’t want to run a marathon, if you don’t enjoy marathons, then don’t start the race. Do something else.
Life is too short to spend your days always “trying to get somewhere you’re not.”
