Today let’s continue with our ongoing class in business heresy. Where we say things that sound crazy and do things that look that way.
I used to have this warped concept of business. It was so warped it made me think I had to be two different people to make it.
My friendly, kind and generous side could be on display most of the time. But when it came to bringing home the bacon, I had to put on a different mask and just get it done.
I did that for a while. And I actually figured out how not to be terrible at it.
But still, living with a split personality like this isn’t ideal for the spirit.
Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that pretty much everything I do in business is based on a single non-negotiable directive:
I will be myself in all things. No exceptions.
And that’s when I woke up one day with the crazy idea that, if money is not the point in LIFE, then why is it the point in business?
And then an even CRAZIER idea bubbled to the surface after that one and I thought, “what if money isn’t the point in business either?”
Like I said, business heresy.
I didn’t realize why I resonated with so many “heretics” throughout history until I looked into the etymology of the word.
That’s when I discovered that heresy is just a word basically meaning CHOOSING FOR ONESELF.
It just so happens that word has been coopted by certain powers that be over the years to describe those who choose for themselves in ways that are not condoned by those same powers that be.
So I decided to choose for myself:
Money is not the point in business.
Leaving a trail of solutions where at one time there were problems IS the point.
Money comes from that. Sometimes. Other times, it doesn’t.
When you get to the point where you train yourself to run contrary to your programming, that this should MATTER, and you simply move forward not attached to outcome, you begin to experience a bizarre sense of freedom I’m not sure the system really wants you to discover.
For if you stop being ruled by money, if you stop being controlled by it, then what?
What a beautiful question we all have the chance to answer for ourselves, should we choose.
