One of the components of transforming yourself into an Incomparable Expert, is to simply do things other people won’t or can’t do.

Yesterday morning, I got a message from a Client Letter subscriber. We’ll call him Jack. Jack had a question about a service I offered and if/how it could benefit him.

I know it sounds revolutionary, but I picked up the phone and called him back.

He told me twice how surprised he was that I had actually responded to him.

This should tell you a few things:

First… when you do things others won’t/can’t do, you stick out as unique.

Second… apparently the bar is SO low, that a simple phone call sticks out. It’s not all you have to do, but it’s a start.

Third… the novelty of technology is fading. It’s becoming about people and connections with those people again-just like it’s always been.

(And I’m thankful for the reminder I got from Jack about how important this is.)

Will Jack ever order? Will that investment of my time ever come back to me? Of course it will. But I could care less about whether or not it comes from Jack. It’ll come… sometime. Maybe it won’t even be in the form of money. And that’s fine.

If the TRANSACTION is all you want, you’re going to lose out to someone who DOESN’T have that as their one and only goal.

My phone call with Jack is just a reminder of the enormous opportunity you have to stick out by taking actions that Incomparable Experts take.

It’s not hard, but it’s also not easy.

People are starved for connection with real human beings.

So to the extent that you can offer your services and prove to them that you are real, and human, helpful, and valuable, you will win.

This is the exact opposite direction of the automated internet business dream where you sell a bunch of electrons and then go play on the beach and “outsource” your customer service to someone on the other side of the world.

First of all, I live in the desert, so there’s no beach anywhere near here. But second of all, I don’t think that’s how I’d like to be treated. So I try my best NOT to treat others that way.

That’s not the business I want to be in. It might be fun for a while, but eventually, you feel like something’s missing. And something is missing.

The goal is to be more helpful and more valuable to them than anyone else. Sometimes, that’s as easy as picking up the phone.
