Never forget that business is a game.
It’s a game that has rules. And although the rules are subject to interpretation and even alteration at will, in the end, we’re still all playing a game.
This brings to light two important things you want to remember:
1. Don’t take this so seriously. It’s a game.
2. Don’t dabble in playing the game. Make a conscious decision to play as hard and as well as you can.
I’ve talked before about the “artist syndrome” I used to be afflicted with. That’s the idea that the best musician/artist/service provider wins the game.
Turns out that’s a big fat lie.
It made me angry in college to see players that weren’t so good get gigs and jobs that I “should” have gotten.
It just didn’t make sense to me.
And the college I attended did a very poor job of explaining the real rules of the world. I had to discover those when I stepped out of school. I quickly found out that:
1. Your political savvy meant more to maintaining your employment than your skill at your job did.
2. People played favorites and very rarely were those favorites chosen based on any objective criteria.
3. Getting angry at the rules of the game made it increasingly difficult to play the game with any level of mastery.
In the end, you can’t shout from the sidelines about how annoying the rules of a game are if you have any intention of winning. And you can’t stand on the sidelines criticizing how others are playing the game… as though you’re better than they are.
No, you have to jump in and play your heart out.
Tonight, the 25% off special ends on my Six Figure Copywriting Book. Now this book is technically for copywriters, but the lessons are really for anyone that wants to get better at “playing the game.” Use coupon code SF25 at checkout to get the discount before tonight. Place your order here.
If you want to play the game, then you should get the book. (I’ve had probably less than 10 refund requests on this in the 5 years this has been available). If you don’t want to play the game, it’s definitely not for you.
Just remember, your clients are playing the game too. It’s not a war, it’s a game. But if you go in unprepared, the chances of winning are slim.
I’m playing to win… my wife and my kids are depending on it.
What are you playing for?
