The Desert of Arizona
Sunny 50 Degrees
In about a week, my daughter, Amelia, turns 12. There she is right there with her two dogs, Bella and August.
We homeschool our kids and one of the things we work on with each of them is creating some sort of business. You wouldn’t believe the number of diverse skills they learn just by working to achieve a goal like this.
You can’t teach a kid in a classroom what it’s like to talk to a stranger, ask them if they want a glass of lemonade, and deal with any type of response from, “I hate lemonade…” to “I’ll take six glasses…”
About a month or two ago, Amelia launched what is really her second business (her first was an organic lemonade stand in the desert :).
My wife is in the essential oil business and my daughter likes to do crafty things. So she setup an internet business selling handmade diffuser necklaces for the essential oils. The necklaces are made out of terra cotta. You just put a drop or two of the oil on the necklace and wear it throughout the day.

I tell you about Amelia as a small demonstration of a few things.
First, there is a big difference between Amelia making crafts and then going out and trying to sell them and what she chose to do. There is no demand for crafts no one ever heard of. Instead, she decided to make a craft for a group of people that already existed, who already used the MAIN product of essential oils.
Basically, she put her problem solving product (how can you benefit from essential oils throughout the whole day) in the stream of EXISTING demand. (Are you doing this with your service? What is the demand that exists? Are you showing up as a solution to that or are you just showing up with what you do?)
Next, Amelia shows up different. She’s 11. There are no other 11 year olds out there making handmade terra cotta diffuser necklaces. So she is what I might call an “Incomparable Expert” in her own special way. 🙂
Finally, Amelia’s business launch is proof of the power of the Platform. You can have a Platform like TheOiloftheDay.com, you can have a Platform on Facebook, you can have a Platform a lot of places. But having one completely changes the dynamic of your business.
What happens (as Seth Godin always says,) is that you go from trying to find clients for your products and services to finding products and services for your clients. In other words, you develop your community of prospective clients that can keep coming back again and again.
When you have access to a Platform, you can distribute value pretty effectively. And that’s how Amelia was able to sell a BOATLOAD of diffuser necklaces in about a week. (She sold enough to have considered buying a beater of a car… Luckily, she’s only 11 so I have a few years before I have to worry about that!)
If an 11 year old can do it, YOU can do it! You just have to start.
