How to Be Selfish and Change the World

I come across lots of talented experts who are living out the “cobbler’s kids have no shoes” story.

What they do so easily for others they can’t/don’t do for themselves.

They generate leads for others, they don’t have leads for themselves.

They give clarity to others, but they have no idea about their own next step.

They help others make a lot of money and yet they live on the roller coaster of feast or famine.

If you’re in a situation like this, know that very little value comes from beating yourself up about it.

This situation is common enough to have an entire STORY around it, with the cobbler and his kids. So it’s far more common than you would believe.

Understanding the problem, however, IS valuable. Because once it’s clear, then you can choose to do something about it.

So what’s the problem?

From my experience, the problem seems to stem from a serious misalignment of priorities.

Never forget why we’re in business.

Yes, we’re in business to serve our clients…

But that’s not the end of the sentence now is it?

We’re in business to serve our clients so that we can create the life we want to live.

The issue isn’t that you can’t provide “shoes” for your kids, it’s that you have your priorities out of order and you consistently put what should be the #1 priority for you and your family LAST.

You serve clients in order to live YOUR life.

But if you don’t give YOUR life attention, then you’re working really hard for I’m not sure what.

If the business isn’t serving YOU and your interests, then what kind of business is it exactly?

Make the adjustments required to put yourself as the DIRECT beneficiary of adding value to the world.

Doesn’t that sound so selfish? Yes, and it’s about time.

But that idea really creates some uncomfortable feelings among anyone who’s received “sheep” training.

The word selfish gets a pretty bad rap. Selfish means to be concerned with your own self interest.

But since you’re living YOUR LIFE, whose self interest would any sane individual be MORE concerned about?

Being overworked, frustrated, stressed out, overwhelmed and under paid is NO POSITION from which to help a lot of people.

Save yourself, serve the world.

Your abundance diminishes no one. In fact, it puts you in a position to truly help in a powerful way.
