It is impossible to build demand for you if the supply of you is ever increasing.
So when you say to prospects, “We can meet whenever it’s convenient for you…,” you might think you’re trying to help them. You probably do it because you’re a nice person. But you’re actually hurting yourself and them.
You are killing the attraction towards you that’s required for them to actually get the full benefit of working with you.
The entire point of the platform model (in addition to adding value to the lives of many) is that it creates demand for you far in excess of your supply.
You get to figure out what to do with that demand according to the type of business you want to have.
Maybe you create products to meet some of that demand.
Maybe you put your knowledge, experience and expertise into newsletters and offer those.
Maybe you take some of your custom services and transform those into a type of product that allows you to deliver more quickly and with less effort.
Maybe you just allow people to form in a line to work with you when you have room. A waiting list is an excellent clue it’s time to raise your fees.
It’s up to you.
What’s an example of limiting the supply of you?
For me, I have seven (SEVEN!) kids running around here. So unless I want it to sound like I’m operating a daycare in the background, spending time on the phone requires a fair bit of planning. That’s why phone work happens on TUESDAYS. When one Tuesday is full, that means the next opportunity is the following Tuesday.
I create the structure and the structure ends up creating a limited supply of me.
“But Jason, why don’t you just get a babysitter or a nanny. That’s what really successful people do…” Ha!
Why would I trade in what I consider REAL success (being here with them) for pursuing what others call success? No thanks. That’s not for me.
It might be right for you, however, and that’s the point. This business you have is your blank canvas. You do with it what you want. Some things you do will work better than others. Rinse and repeat.
What’s the real secret to doing this and building a structure around you that limits the supply of you in the marketplace?
Do you have to be popular? No.
Good looking? No way!
Nice? That’s up for debate, but it’s probably optional as well.
The real secret is to install in you the idea that you are THE leader.
Unfortunately, most of us have decades of brainwashing to undo that are messing with you being in that position.
But that’s the work. Become the leader on the inside, act like it on the outside.
You are not BETTER, mind you. But in this relationship with your prospects and clients, you take the position of leader. That’s just how it is.
If you need an “upgrade” in how you view YOU, there’s something I put together not long ago with that purpose in mind.
