I’ve found that the most effective way to change my life and business isn’t to change the people and things around me… the smarter choice is to change me.
That’s usually where the problem can be found.
In general, I think that people are doing the best they can with what they’ve got.
While “the best they can” might not be anywhere near good according to you, me or the world, in the end there’s not much we can do about it.
Let’s take money for example.
When a client pays late, it’s easy to get annoyed. I know I’ve done it.
But looking back at those times, the money really isn’t the issue. It eventually shows up. Nobody dies. It all works out in the end.
The real problem in a situation like that is caused by the friction between how I thought things would go and how they actually did go.
The real problem that creates the emotion is when reality splits from the path I think it should travel.
That’s control freak territory folks, and I’ve stepped into it many times. It’s an unhappy place to live because arguing with reality (what is) is never a smart idea.
And yet I still try to this day.
“He said he would do this…”
“She said she would do that…”
And when it doesn’t happen, you get all bent out of shape.
Eventually, I stumbled upon a much healthier way to deal with this.
Over time, I’m learning just to expect it.
Expect things not to happen exactly as you want them to happen. Expect things not to happen exactly as others promise you they will happen.
That way, you can focus on your real goals without getting derailed every time the world doesn’t conform to your wishes. It takes all the pressure off to go this route.
In the end, I think it’s smart to just stop taking everything so seriously and make sure you have fun on this journey.
