So they say you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink…

But how in the world do you get him to the water in the first place?

Well, there’s teaching, selling and demonstration.

You could stand there and start talking to the horse about the molecular structure of the water and why it would be so healthy if he would just come over and take a sip.

That is teaching.

Or… you could start telling him how much he looks like he needs this water, how his friends would like him better if he was well hydrated… and how his horse wife would respect him more if he didn’t look so darn thirsty all the time.

This is more like “selling.”

And finally, you could just stand there making lemonade, using the water to have a big party with a water slide, having drinks with friends, even whipping up some shaved ice concoction or even an ice sculpture with the water.

This is demonstration.

Eventually, when the horse spots you doing something he wants, he’ll come over on his own. You won’t have to lead him at all.

That’s the power of demonstration. That’s the way to attract a client WITHOUT having to transform yourself from an advisor into a salesman to close the deal.
