About seven years ago, I got all wrapped up in the E-Myth by Michael Gerber.
I read the book, I took the training. I was on fire.
And so I went out and hired someone to help me in my tech consulting business.
I was in charge! Boy was that cool. For like a minute.
I sent the guy on one project. The whole process was so annoying I didn’t try another one.
Now there’s nothing wrong with the E-myth. The book is great, the training is great. The “build a franchise” approach is cool. And ultimately, it’s a clear path to freedom for overworked entrepreneurs.
But it’s not for me. Why?
Because I don’t want a business like that.
I don’t want to build an “organization.” I don’t want something that is bigger than me. I don’t want something I can sell. I don’t want employees. I don’t even want an “exit” strategy.
I simply want to have a great life using the interwebz to take ideas and turn them into money by helping people. I like that. To me, it’s play. Truth be told, I haven’t really “worked” all that much since I quit my last job back in 2003. It’s just fun. Not easy, but still fun.
Of course I had to spend years chasing after a bunch of things I didn’t want until I actually figured out what I did want.
Even though this isn’t 1950, it’s just as easy to fall into the trap of keeping up with the Joneses in a virtual kind of way.
Don’t get sucked in.
Just do what you want.
You don’t need a good reason. If you want it, do it.
Don’t “do what you love because the money will follow.” Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. Who knows? Just do what you love because what the hell else is life for!
Pick your path and ignore everyone else.
