Spread the Word – Friends Don’t Let Friends Work With Bad Clients

Whew…
I just put the finishing touches on a client project this morning and am about to head out to the park with my kids for a little bit.
But I had an important realization over the weekend that I want to share with you first.
I’ve had this realization before, but for some reason, I often forget this little “truth” and it always gets me into trouble.
Before I tell you what it is, understand this:
What I’m about to say is going to sound extremely cynical.
To someone just getting started as an independent professional, it might sound like I’m a cranky, disgruntled dude with an axe to grind.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Understand that one of the most important tenets in my life is that the buck stops with me… period. That means the responsibility for what happens in my life is mine and mine alone.
OK, so here’s the little “truth” I’d like to pass on for today:
As an independent professional, you are on your own. And that means that you cannot expect anyone at any time to have your own best interest as their focus. You have to look out for yourself, because no one else wants the job. If you don’t look out for yourself, no one else is going to do it for you.
Just tape that above your computer and remember to read it on a regular basis.
I guarantee you that remembering that short phrase will save you from a lot of frustration.
See you next time,
