I used to think hard work was a virtue. But these days, I don’t even know what hard work is.
It doesn’t seem to have one definition, it has about seven billion of them – one definition for each being on the planet.
“You should work hard.”
“Hard work is how I got here.”
“With enough hard work, anything is possible.”
“Everything you want is on the other side of hard work!”
Really? I don’t even know what that means. Sounds like a lot of unresolved internal issues getting projected all over the place in an effort to feel important or be seen.
Hard work, as best I can tell, seems to be nothing more than a story people tell themselves and others.
Some people tell that story to inspire others.
Some tell it to make themselves feel important and valuable.
Some tell it to explain away the lack of achievement in others.
It’s all over the place.
If you could achieve everything you ever wanted without the hard work, would you? Should you? Is there something wrong with that?
Or is there something wrong with a thought form and story that would make people feel a certain way about the actions they choose? Where’d you get the story you have about “hard work?”
Do you want to carry it around for the rest of your life?
Are you here to “work hard?”
Perhaps it’s time to give up the stories and be OK with answering that question however you see fit.
What if the story you tell yourself is the story you’ll tend to live out?
