Dang, I Could Have Asked For More

Ever have a client where, the minute you knew you were getting the project, you thought to yourself, “Man, I should have asked for more money… I know I could have gotten it.”

I’ve experienced this too many times and I think thoughts like this are a symptom of a deeper issue that you should get to work on right away.

If you’ve experienced something like this in your business, here are two things to keep in mind:

  1. First, I’ve found it’s never a smart idea to fight with reality. No matter how big of a positive thinker you are, you can’t really argue with what is. I’ve found it’s best to be grateful for what is. (Note: I know this is a work in progress in my own life.) So the first thing you should do is accept what is. You quoted the fee. The fee was accepted. That’s the fee. Be OK with that. Move on. Simple as that.
  2. Second, understand that the fee you quoted was your own doing. If you work with a new client and end up feeling like you could have “gotten more…” The question I’d ask you is, “Then why didn’t you ask for more?” Do you know the answer to that question?

I know in my own business, the times I’ve felt like this are because I asked for the fee I thought the client would pay, or the fee that kept me feeling comfortable, instead of asking for the fee I wanted to receive.

The key is to be able to ask for what you want without reservation and without feeling like you have to rationalize yourself to anyone.

This, of course, is easier if you actually FEEL like you’re worth it.

It’s amazing to me just how many “business problems” are actually self-confidence and self-worth problems in disguise.

This is one of them.

During your next client negotiation, keep asking yourself, “Am I asking for the amount of money I want or am I asking for the amount of money I think I can get?”

You’ll never know what you can “get” until you have the guts to ask for what you want.

Try it.

See you tomorrow,

P.S. My business partner, Michael Silk, and I recently recorded a full hour and 13 minute presentation on boosting your mindset when working with clients.

The presentation is NOT your normal mindset jargon.

In fact, I made it pretty clear throughout the whole thing that I don’t think MINDSET has much to do with thinking at all!

The presentation itself could sell for probably almost $100 (after all, getting this right could make you thousands), but right now, it’s not for sale. It IS, however, instantly available when you subscribe to the SILK REPORT ADVISORY. If you want access to a steady stream of monthly Strategy Reports to help you grow your business with clients, THIS is the thing to have.

Time is running out to get your hands on the October issue, where Michael takes you behind the scenes and shows you how he crafts a promotion for a consultant/coach to sell their services.

Start your subscription NOW and get instant access to the Mindset Presentation.
