Want To Buy My DVD Rewinding Machine?

For as smart as we all think we are, sometimes human beings do some crazy things. And one of the craziest things we do is work really hard trying to get people to buy things they don’t want. (Like a DVD rewinding machine.)

A pretty website can’t help that.

Excellent copywriting won’t help it either.

Nothing much will help if you’re not scratching the itch of the right person in the right spot.

It’s frustrating, I’ve done it. And if that’s what you’re experiencing, take a breath, and realize you’re probably NOT stupid 🙂 You are just offering something the audience in front of you doesn’t want at the moment.

There are basically three ways to fix this:

  • Convince them to buy it anyway.
  • Make something they want.
  • Find those who want what you already have.

So let’s disqualify Option #1 because that would be a sad way to go through life. You might get “bidness” awards, but you wouldn’t win any human awards.

Option #2 is off the table for me because I think that’s boring and not fulfilling to me as a creator of things.

So that leaves Option #3.

And now we come to the reason I use the media platform.

Because instead of making something just because people want it, I’d rather make things I enjoy making and then find the people that want those things.

This is why the platform model can be so powerful. Because instead of convincing people to buy what you have, it allows you to “collect” the people who already want what you have.

I wish I had thought this way 8 or 9 years ago. But I didn’t. I was apparently supposed to walk a more frustrating and far more educational path so I could learn to see things differently.

And so I did. Ouch!

And now I can offer that path to anyone else who is interested. Notice the path is already worn. I didn’t make it just because I thought people would want it. I made it because I wanted to and because it solved a problem, then I went looking for other folks who would benefit as well.

I’m simply collecting the people for whom it’s the right choice. (P.S. the DVD rewinding machine was a joke, no platform in the world could help you with that one 🙂
