There’s a big difference between being busy and getting things done.



There’s an even bigger difference between getting things done and making progress.

In the client business, it’s really easy to let yourself get pulled in 1,000 directions before you even get started in the morning.

Each day, you basically have a choice. You can make your agenda a priority or you can let someone else make their agenda your priority.

I’ve done the latter for way too long.

And so, tomorrow, I start (okay… restart) a new habit.

No email gets opened before 10AM. Period.

That includes my “makes me dumb” smartphone.

So let’s see. If I shut off all incoming forms of communication and wake up and start to work… what does that mean I’m going to work on?

Hmmmm… the only thing that’s left is the work I planned on doing.

Now that sounds like a nice calm morning doesn’t it?

I know that I’m good at doing 12 things at once. And I’m good at reacting to people’s needs spontaneously and helping them out.

But just like it was with my music career, just because I’m good at it doesn’t mean I should be doing it.

I make major progress when I plan and work deliberately.

I might be less busy (Hallelujah), do fewer things (I can live with it), but I make MORE progress (Duh).

In the end, progress towards my goals is what matters most.
