It’s hard not to compare yourself to others.

We’ve all been trained quite well to do it. You look over at someone, and that someone is making a certain amount of money in their business.

You compare yourself to them.

If money is motivating for you, maybe you think something like, “That’s where I want to be.”

If money’s not your thing, maybe you look at the recognition and notoriety someone receives and wonder why you don’t have that.

And so you follow the training you receive and make up your mind to just go out and “do it.” You’re going to make it happen. You’re going to go out and get what you want, kill it, and drag it home.

For me, that whole way of operating in the world has created a huge amount of frustration in my life over the years.

I thought it was only because I had to “get better” at the whole process.

I’ve come to the realization that’s just not true.

I’ve realized over the past few weeks that my habit of “making things happen” is simply not me. It’s something I learned in a book somewhere and just swallowed without too much critical thought. It’s something I heard the world tell me to do if I wanted to be “successful.”

“Look at what successful people are doing and do that.” That’s the type of thing I read over and over and over again.

And I bought it.

The thing is, I’m not after someone else’s life anymore. I’m only interested in living my own. And there’s no book for that one.

So what does this mean? This means I stop searching for “the answer.” This means I give up on that never ending search for “what I’m looking for.” It means I slow down and make it a priority in my life not to fall asleep at the wheel.

In my work with clients, this means I stop trying to do it like everyone else and start using my unique skills and abilities to chart my own course.

To really chart my own course.

We live in the age of comparison… and it can kill you.

Don’t get seduced by it. You are here to live your life. And what others are doing or not doing is really none of your business.

See you next time,
