RE: Rough around the edges

Fall showed up over the weekend.

There was a big storm and then, BAM… instant fall. Who knows if it’ll stick around, but it sure is nice to be cool.

That line where the edge of the storm met the old weather caused some turbulence. It was actually pretty fascinating. Not sure why I enjoy crazy weather so much, but I do.

Rough edges are interesting.

Reminds me of a client not long ago who asked about how “forthright” he should be on his Platform. Particularly about sharing his strong opinions and unique perspectives in and around his area of expertise.

He was concerned about what some people would think.

I replied that it’s those “rough edges” that actually make him interesting. In fact, without those, there’s really no reason to pay attention.

As a species, we’re about 99.9% the same. On a cellular level, we’re pretty much identical.

EXCEPT…

Except for those tiny little points of differentiation that change everything. It’s the .1% that completely sets you apart from EVERYONE.

If you’re going to use this to your advantage, two things need to be true:

  1. You have to understand YOU enough to recognize these points of differentiation.
  2. You have to resist the training you’ve probably received to HIDE those things. In fact, the goal is to shine the spotlight right on those things.

Yes, it takes work to accomplish the first item. But really, that’s the easy part.

The harder part is having the guts required to accomplish the second item.

What will people think?

“What will people think” is the largest prison ever created. But there’s no need for walls or fences or even doors to be built.

Because everyone who walks into this particular prison donates their time and effort to build all of those things for themselves.

But you can get out. Today, right now.

What happens when you bring your BIG self out into the world to meet the needs of your clients?

What happens when “what people think” of you no longer has any power over you?

Now there’s a question worth asking.
