For most of my client engagements (especially new clients), I receive 100% of my fee before work begins. I like doing that because it avoids a lot of potential issues when it comes to payment for my services.

Not too long ago, I made an exception to this. Because of an imminent deadline for the project, I did the work first.

Funny thing happened…

I’m still waiting on the payment.

Isn’t that interesting how that works?

I’ve worked with enough clients who’ve had no problem paying 100% on commencement that I know it’s more than possible.

If a client has a problem with that, then I know there’s a lack of trust there. That’s fine, but more and more I’m realizing I shouldn’t be working with those clients.

Can getting paid FIRST work with your clients? Of course it can. It’s your business. You choose how it runs… period.

Remember, at some point in history, people said flying was impossible.

See you next time,

P.P.S. Oh, and if you can’t get paid first because you charge for hours worked, that’s a clue that maybe you should look for a new and better (for you and your clients) way to charge for your services 🙂
